The Depot Museum in Lake Wales was originally built in 1928 by the Atlantic Coastline Railway as a passenger terminal. During this time Central Florida was growing and tourism and business was moving to the area and the railway had outgrown the original depot about a half mile away. As times changed passenger rail service was discontinued in 1954. The Depot Museum opened in 1976 and has been managed by the local historical organization.
In the museum you will find artifacts related to presidential visits, Bok Tower and information about Mr. Bok, a working model train, and donated items from a era long gone. One of the real treasures in the museum is the original post office box that was in TJ Parker’s general store back in the 1910s.
The museum does a great job of telling the local history. Unfortunately, it appears that has gone through some financial difficulties but will reopen in May 2016. The following YouTube video will give you a tour of the exhibits from early 2015.
